Three hundred and five teams
qualified and entered the 2021 U.S. Angler’s Choice Championship on Lake
Guntersville, Scottsboro Alabama. The event was held March18th and 19th
on what is known as the land of big bass and giant sacks "The Big G".
Anglers utilized a seven day practice period prior to the two
competition days to hone their skills and narrow their waters.
At full pool Lake Guntersville stretches 75 miles from Nickajack Dam to
Guntersville Dam, covers 69,100 surface acres and boasts 900 miles of
beautiful shoreline. This would be the stage in which 305 teams would
compete, all looking for that winning pattern or area that would lend
enough weight to take home one of three Bass Cat Boats rigged with
Mercury Outboards.
The event was hosted by the Mountain Lakes Chamber of Commerce and the
City of Scottsboro. The official lodging sites for the event were the
Hampton Inn & Suites and the Comfort Inn & Suites. Scottsboro offered
teams and families plenty of entertainment while not on the water and
some fantastic places to dine. The people living in the Scottsboro
community are some of the friendliest you will find anywhere in the
country, true Southern hospitality.
The practice period leading up to the event had teams fishing in mild
weather with an occasional shower, great pre-Spring weather. The final
day of practice saw a major front move into the area, the threat of
severe weather was real on this day and the night leading to competition
day. We are all thankful the severe weather never did materialize. Just
heavy rain and a lot of it. The rain came to an end prior to the day one
launch. Day one did however see winds exceeding the forecast of ten to
fifteen gusting to twenty. It was very windy by late morning further
complicating the post frontal bite and muddy waters created by the day
prior deluge but this is Lake Guntersville and these are Angler's Choice
Sticks.
When the scales closed after day one, the Lake Shelbyville team of Greg
Coleman and Travis Gillett found themselves leading the event with five
fish weighing 25.50lbs with several nipping at their heels.
Day two the weather would be much more cooperative. The winds laid down
and the water started to stabilize.
Adam Eggertsen
& Dan Shoraga 2021 U.S. Angler's Choice Champions!
The final day weigh-in
concluded minutes after the last flight checked in and The Lake Egypt
Division team of Adam Eggertsen and Dan Shoraga would show that
you're never out of contention on Lake Guntersville. The team brought a
massive 29.09lb bag to the scales anchored with an 8.80lb Big G grown
one. The bag vaulted them from fifty-sixth place to be crowned U.S.
Angler's Choice Champions.
The team focused their efforts on the back of a single pocket. The team
reported fishing Bluegill colored swim jigs and flipping a pitt boss
around cover in water depths of two to three feet. Day one had the area
muddy but they stuck with it on day two, there was a clear inflow. The
team had twenty-five plus in the boat by 9am. They won a new Bass Cat Pantera II with a Mercury 200
ProXS plus cash and prizes.
The team reported a good week of practice
but felt strongly about this one area. That feeling paid off, the team
is sponsored by Just Add Water Bait & Tackle.
2nd Place Greg Coleman & Travis Gillett
The second place team of
Greg Coleman and Travis Gillett fishing out of the Shelbyville Lake
Division reported a fair practice, the team each used their own boats to
cover more water. Due to the major influx of water they selected a
somewhat protected area in a creek arm to focus their efforts on. On day
one they utilized Traps in five to seven feet of water and a green
pumpkin chatterbait in three to five feet of water. Day two had their
area muddier unlike the first place team. They had to adjust and flipped
and punched grass in the area. They ended the event with 42.88lbs less
than one pound from taking the win. The team won a new Bass Cat Pantera
Classic with a 150HP 4S plus cash and prizes.
The team is sponsored by their wives, Skeeter Boats, Yamaha, Ranger
Boats and Mercury Marine.
Power-Pole Top Contenders Third place
finish went to Beau Govreau and Brett Govreau
The Power-Pole Top
Contenders Third place finish went to the Lake of the Ozarks team of
Beau Govreau and Brett Govreau. They reported a tough practice but did
find fish both shallow and deep. They went to their shallow area on day
one and spent a couple hours with only a few small keepers. They then
went to their deep fish and stayed on them for the rest of the event.
They were fishing water twenty-five to thirty feet on unnamed baits. The
team is sponsored by Caymas Boats.
