The last Anglers’ Choice event for the Wappapello Division was held on Saturday out of host marina Chaonia Landing. Thirty-two teams participated. The air temp dropped into the low 50s overnight with the leading edge of the first major cold front of the fall. Skies were clear to start the day but quickly gave way to overcast and windy conditions. A stiff NNW breeze of 15 to 20 mph developed during the day. Wappapello has been known to be a challenge at times, especially during the fall months, but the bite seemed to be strong for most of the competitors on this day.
Brothers Ron and Dan Niswonger finished at the top spot with a five fish limit that weighed 19.13 pounds. “We went as far down the lake as we could go and stayed on that end of the lake all day,” said Dan Niswonger. We fished one spot of rip rap bank for the first 3 hours of the tournament and then just hit a couple more main lake spots in the afternoon,” he added. “It was junk fishing 101,” he said. “All five of the fish that we weighed in were caught on different lures.” The team reported catching all their fish in less than five feet of water. They took home $1550.00 plus trophies for their trouble.
Gale Breckenridge and Waco Johnson took Second Place with a 17.87 Pound limit of bass. “We caught two of our fish up the river, and the rest of them were down the lake,” said Breckinridge. “We caught our fish a little deeper than normal and we got them on worms, and jigs,” he said. They collected $985.00 Plus trophies for Second Place.
Third Place went to Adam Hutson and partner Jeremiah Gray. “We junk fished all day,” said Hutson. “We fished from Otter Creek to the dam and caught fish on buzz-baits, lipless baits, jigs, worms, and spinnerbaits.” They took home $555.00 plus trophies for their five fish 16.11-pound limit.
Jamie and Colton Thurston took home Fourth Place honors by virtue of their 15.68-pound limit of fish and earned $330.00.
Big Bass of the event was caught by Don Lynn and Partner Larry Thurman. It weighed 6.14 Pounds and was worth $280.00 plus trophies. The big fish was fooled by a jig.
Warren Manion and partner Billy Deblois claimed the points champion spot for the Wappapello Division. They recorded five top ten finishes for the year including one 1st Place, (2) 2nd Place, a 4th Place, and a 6th place finish. That’s a very impressive record. Congratulations to Warren Manion and Billy Deblois.
