September 24th, 2011…Lake Shafer
The seventh and final event of the U.S. Angler's choice Region 3 Indiana trail was held on Lake Shafer on September 24th, 2011. It is hard to believe another season was about to come to an end. The most positive aspect of this season was the average number of participants has increased from less than twelve boats to over eighteen. This year the Indiana division kept its schedule close to home and as a result it became less expensive to travel and participate. The Indiana trail held all seven events on Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman for the 2011 season. A lot was at stake in this final event as Jim Han and Wade Cohagen were poised to capture their first Angler of the Year title, but there were four teams that were in hot pursuit in case Jim and Wade stumbled. The weather was cloudy, rainy and a hint of fall was in the air. Sixteen teams rolled into Indiana Beach Campground to participate in the event.
John Raines and Gordon Beck capture their first win of the season with an outstanding day of five keepers that weighed 11.43 pounds. John and Gordon have been fishing together now for three seasons and their hard work and dedication have paid off. This was a great way for them to end their season and gain momentum heading into the classic on Lake Guntersville. John and Teri Raines, owners of Twin Lakes Fish & Game, have been long time supporters and sponsors of the Angler's Choice trail. I would like to personally thank them for their continuous professional and generous support of Angler's Choice, bass tournament anglers, and conservation and wildlife. Thank you John and Teri, and congratulations John and Gordon on a great tournament.
In second place was the team of Dennis Waldron and Chris Hale. Dennis and Chris were able to bring in a five fish limit and capture big bass of the tournament, a 3.46 beautiful Lake Shafer largemouth. Dennis and Chris came into the tournament just nine points back in the Angler of the Year race. Dennis and Chris weighed in at 9.41 pounds, putting the pressure on Jim and Wade. Congratulations on a good day and a great season guys!
In third place was the team of Jeff Vandergraff and Bill Kelly. Jeff and Bill were able to bring in a five fish limit that weighed 8.97 pounds. A flurry at the end of the day had both anglers wishing they had a little more time. Congratulations on your third place finish fellas.
Rounding out the top five were the teams of Don Amsden and Ed Oilar and Jim Han and Wade Cohagen. Don and Ed had four fish that weighed 8.91 pounds, of which all were smallmouth. It is always awesome to see a team bring up all smallmouth of this caliber. Jim and Wade put the Angler of the Year race away with a solid day of five keepers that weighed 8.74 pounds. This gave them a final margin of victory by just over five points. Congratulations on a great season Jim and Wade.
The final Indianapolis division tournament on Geist Reservoir will be held October 9th. Special thanks go out to our 2011 sponsors: Hinkle Construction, Lafayette Copier, High Tech Motor Sports, The Tire Barn, Main Street Station, Twin Lakes Fish & Game, Westbrook Agency, and Trash Kans LLC.
